La Provence

La Provence, FranceThis holiday was a dream come true, La Provence... fields of lavender, vineyards, sunflowers, historic villages and beautiful weather. We were amazed by the huge diversity of landscapes, olive groves, mountains, historic churches, so many colours and the essence of lavender everywhere. We've seen many castles on the way and every village we visited had its own specific character. I'm happy to share with you photos I took during our time in Provence and if you have any questions about this part of France, don't hesitate to contact me. Without further ado, let me show you our first day in Provence.

The best and easiest way to see Provence is by car as you can stop wherever you want. I was beyond excitement when all of a sudden a huge lavender or sunflower field appeared in front of us. I just HAD to get out of the car, if only to admire the view or take some pictures. We were headed towards the city called Sault (35km from Gordes), with a small stop in Saint Saturnin les Apt, a beautiful historic village with stunning view from the top of the castle's ruins and a beautiful chapel from the 9th century.

The area around Sault was the only place where we saw lavender fields. If you want to see lavender, you have to plan your visit carefully. Lavender is usually harvested during the last week of July and the first week of August. We walked around Sault, visited the local market and were on the road again. Our next stop was a beautiful village (and my personal favourite), Simiane-la-Rotonde. One of the most beautiful villages in Haute-Provence, this tranquil place was all about beautiful old stone houses with decorated doors, window frames and stunning views (definitely worth seeing). From there we went to Viens and drove back to Gordes through Apt, just in time for a little swim in the pool before dinner. xx
