Pastry competition

I find baking so much more difficult than cooking. You can be creative, that's for sure, but improvising in baking is very difficult, if even possible. I absolutely admire all of those people who get it completely right every single time. Well I guess they make a few mistakes on the way too but that's not what I mean (my baking is a disaster every single time!) haha.

Few days ago I was invited to something very special, and first of its kind ever done. Pastry competition in the kitchen of Cédrig Grolet at Hotel Le Meurice. Although Cedric and his team do this competition once every six weeks, this was the first time they invited food enthusiast (read me and two food journalists/bloggers) to choose the best, most innovative and yummiest dessert; the theme was Fruit & Vegetables! Just to put things clear, those tomatoes are not real tomatoes, neither are the avocados or cocoa beans... every fruit or veggie you see on the photos is an actual dessert, sweet as it gets! Pretty incredible right?!

It was such an exclusive experience to see what goes behind the pastry scenes and how some of the most exquisite desserts are born! There were a few moments of pressure and nervousness as you can probably imagine when presenting your creation in front of your boss, colleagues and a few strangers (us). I can only imagine that it must've been quite nerve-wracking, but we've had such a great time and the atmosphere in the kitchen was fantastic! The best part was the opportunity to taste all of the pastries! My favourite? Passion fruit and avocado which was also the winner of the competition. And the prize? Pastry class of choice, how inspiring! What better gift for a future pastry chef, right? Getting better at his job, love this!

I hope you'll enjoy the photos and don't hesitate to zoom, I still can't believe those perfectly ripe mangoes are in fact delicious pastries! xx

  1. Nice post! (only the photos take long to load..) Baking is really much more difficult, but the result is always (mostly) sweet. :)
